Impact Testing Methods for Site Characterization Workshop

Impact testing methods have been applied in civil engineering practice worldwide for centuries. Usage of these techniques continues to play a key role in assessing the potential behavior of geologic materials in situ for engineering purposes.

The DFI Testing and Evaluation Committee will host a one-day workshop addressing best practices in utilizing:
  • Standard Penetration Tests
  • Becker Hammer Tests, and
  • Dynamic Cone Penetrometer Tests

The workshop will be aimed at highlighting the optimal use and understanding of these tools to enhance quality of site investigation. Deep foundations and liquefaction assessment applications of these methods will be emphasized.

Registration for the Workshop on May 1, includes:

  • Workshop Materials
  • Networking Breakfast
  • Morning and Afternoon Breaks
  • Networking Lunch
  • Access to online proceedings following the workshop/conference

Key contributors to the seminar include:
  • Jason DeJong – Professor at University of California, Davis
  • Adda Athanasopoulos-Zekkos - Associate Professor at University of Michigan
  • Ryan Allin - Project Engineer with Pile Dynamics, Inc.
  • Marcel Bielefeld - Commercial Director with Allnamics
  • David Tara - Principal with Thurber Engineering
  • Mike Holloway - Consulting Engineer
  • A Representative from Conetec

These contributors represent academia, equipment providers, practitioners and end-users of the collected data, and therefore as a group they can provide insight on the subject matter from all different angles.

The presentations will provide: an overview of the impact-testing methods; details on how the tests are performed; established standards for their use; methods for interpreting test results; strengths and limitations in their use; case histories illustrating use of these methods in practice; and discussion of the method improvements that enhance the reliability of these techniques.

Workshop type discussions will supplement these presentations to provide ample opportunity to address questions from the attendees on the effective use of these techniques and their incorporation in specifications to enhance the value of site investigations.
