The Partner Alliance for Safer Schools (PASS) recently released its Revision 7 Safety and Security Guidelines, designed to help schools create safer learning environments through layered, best-practice strategies. In this session, Ken Cook will provide an overview of the PASS organization, explain recent changes to the guidelines, and demonstrate how design professionals can use these tools to support school administrators in implementing effective security measures. Attendees will learn about the newly restructured Campus Exterior Perimeter Layer, added considerations for cybersecurity, and how the PASS checklist and other resources can inform school design and renovations that prioritize the safety and well-being of students, staff, and visitors.

At the end of this session, attendees will:

  1. Describe the structure and purpose of the PASS Safety and Security Guidelines and how they support safe school environments through a layered approach.
  2. Identify and interpret key changes introduced in Revision 7, including the consolidation of the Perimeter and Parking Lot layers and the addition of cybersecurity considerations.
  3. Evaluate how the PASS checklist and associated resources can inform design decisions that address both physical and digital threats to school safety.
  4. Apply the PASS Guidelines to assist schools in implementing security best practices that align with educational facility design and support occupant health, safety, and welfare.
