School-issued devices go home every night, and the district’s AI policy goes with them. Home is where families have the most questions about AI and the least visibility into how their child uses it, especially with the new requirements under HEA 1004. By January 1, 2027, every Indiana school corporation and charter school must give parents control of school devices outside school, including stronger filtering, site blocking, and time limits. Parents want to know what AI tools are allowed, how to set controls, and what to do if something looks wrong.
This session walks district and technology leaders through extending AI transparency to families to meet HEA 1004. Drawing on 2.25 million student AI conversations on school-issued devices across 1,454 districts in 39 states, we’ll look at what student AI use really looks like day to day. We’ll then work through the AI visibility decisions HEA 1004 requires: whether parents can see AI activity, what they see and when, how that view aligns with district policy, and how safety concerns are handled. We’ll close with how to introduce family visibility in the languages families speak and how to help parents turn what they see into conversations at home about AI use. The rollout steps work with any AI tools.
Learning objectives
- Use real student AI usage data to answer the questions families ask about AI at school.
- Decide what AI activity families can see and when, in line with the district AI policy and student privacy.
- Leave with a plan for introducing family AI visibility, including conversation starters parents can use at home.
