Description

The Florida State University Coastal and Marine Laboratory (FSUCML) is located on the Florida coast in Franklin County, adjacent to Alligator Harbor Aquatic Preserve. In the past 60 years, the estuarine habitat on the FSUCML property has been highly impacted by anthropogenic alterations, increased storm activity, and severe shoreline erosion. This has led to the degradation of the estuarine habitats, and a decrease in the overall shoreline resiliency. To combat this, the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) partnered with FSUCML administration to implement an integrated estuarine enhancement project that improved shorebird, salt marsh, and oyster reef habitat. A combination of 12 intertidal and 10 subtidal oyster reef breakwater structures were designed and constructed using native Florida limestone. The intertidal breakwaters added 680 linear feet of oyster reefs to the site, while the subtidal breakwaters were 10 feet by 75 feet and added 7,500 square feet to the site, for a total of 0.26 acres of constructed oyster reef. The goal of these structures was to protect and enhance the saltmarsh habitat by providing wave attenuation and to increase biodiversity by creating a habitat structure for oysters and other marine organisms. The intertidal oyster reefs were installed in the fall of 2021, and year 3 monitoring showed an 96% average percent coverage for oysters, with multiple size classes present. The subtidal oyster reefs were installed in the winter of 2025, and year 1 monitoring showed a 53% average percent coverage for oyster, with primarily spat and small sub-juveniles present. Monitoring of the site will continue annually, while we determine the success of this project. This project is an excellent case study of how natural limestone rock can be an effective tool for natural resource managers to protect coastal shorebird habitat through oyster habitat restoration.
