Water Mapping, LLC has developed a state-of-the-art real-time mapping technology with multispectral sensors mounted on a manned aircraft for oil spill detection and characterization. This system has been tested and calibrated in controlled setting laboratories and demonstrated its operationalization over the Santa Barbara seeps in California. Our system consists on a set of multispectral sensors that record data on-board the aircraft’s workstation and process mapping products seemingly in real time. By using Starlink connectivity data can be broadcasted live and shared with oil spill responders as the multispectral system detects floating oil layers of various thicknesses. This system offers a way to effectively deliver data for oil spill response planning and for tactical positioning of remediation operations. The multispectral array of 10 sensors includes channels covering wavelengths from UV to Infrared. The ability to operate this system at multiple altitudes facilitate covering large areas in short flight times.
