Description

The 2010 Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill directly and indirectly harmed avian resources in the northern Gulf of America through exposure to oil, disturbance from response activities, and degradation of habitat. The Texas Trustee Implementation Group (Texas TIG) allocated more than $40 million of Texas’ share of the Natural Resource Damage Assessment settlement funds towards restoring for birds. One of the ways the Texas TIG is accomplishing this is by implementing multiple bird rookery islands restoration projects. These projects aim to stabilize and protect rookery island shorelines, restore land mass and elevations, restore vegetation to increase longevity of the islands, and increase the amount of waterbird nesting habitat available along the Texas coastline. This poster will highlight several of these projects on the Texas Gulf Coast in different stages of completion as well as the lessons learned in navigating complex technical, legal, and logistical challenges while restoring for colonial waterbirds.
