Is your community's housing ready for tomorrow's hazards? Affordable, resilient housing is crucial to the survival of coastal communities in the face of increasing climate hazards; yet, many communities lack the necessary tools and frameworks to systematically address housing vulnerabilities. The updated Resilient Housing Planning Guide (RHPG) poster addresses this gap by providing communities with a comprehensive, accessible toolkit for proactive housing resilience planning that emphasizes sunny-day mitigation rather than reactive post-disaster response.
This poster presents the who, what, when, where, why, and how of resilience planning using the RHPG framework. It demonstrates how communities can build capacity for resilience planning through strategic team building, vulnerability assessments, and evidence-based strategies. Key components include: guidance on assembling the ideal cross-sector planning team of local government officials, emergency managers, housing authorities, community-based organizations, and residents (who); assessment tools for identifying housing vulnerabilities and creating customizable strategies addressing land use, building standards, and community engagement applicable to any community and its unique hazards (what); the importance of planning for mitigation before disasters strike to reduce long-term recovery costs and community displacement (when); pilot communities across Gulf Coast cities, counties, and parishes that have successfully utilized the RHPG to create locally-tailored resilient housing plans (where); the critical connection between housing resilience and insurance affordability, economic stability, and social equity (why); and implementation support through a newly developed workbook and online training program (how), which are freely available online.
