Description

This project, Empowering Interdisciplinary Coastal Resilience in Mississippi Classrooms, is part of the larger Coastal Connections Program, which is focused on the local impacts of a changing environment on the watershed. The Coastal Connections Program aims to bring together the coastal environment and the community through meaningful, hands-on experiences that raise environmental literacy, adaptability, and stewardship.

This project is aligned to Mississippi state standards for high school classrooms and is administered along the Gulf Coast, supporting teachers from a variety of subjects—including, but not limited to, Art, Social Studies, Math, History, and English.  It helps educators teach about how weather events affect our local communities and environment, and how we can adapt to or reduce those impacts.

As part of the project, teachers lead their students through a Meaningful Watershed Educational Experience (MWEE). Students complete a Coastal Resilience Audit to explore how the changing environment is affecting their school. Then, they create a plan to take action and make a positive impact.
