Snowy Plover banding efforts in Alabama began in 2016. During 2016-2025, 68 plovers were banded across the coast and an additional 21 individuals that were banded elsewhere were observed in Alabama. Several of these plovers observed in Alabama were banded as chicks in Florida. Most (70.4%) adult Snowy Plovers that were banded in Alabama remained in the state year-round. Some appeared to stay close to their breeding territory throughout the year while others made local movements along the coast. Few individuals have been recorded nesting in both Alabama and Mississippi in a breeding season after failed nest attempts in one state. In 2022 we began banding chicks in Alabama, and 14 of the 68 birds were first banded as flightless chicks. Seven of the 14 did not survive to fledging. We resighted all seven surviving chicks after fledging, and one returned to their natal area to breed the following year. Band-resight data is providing insight into survival, habitat use and movements of Snowy Plovers within Alabama and across the northern Gulf.
