Name
A Collaborative Effort to Establish a Water Quality and Sediment Baseline in the Coastal Alabama Watershed

Description

Post Deepwater Horizon oil spill, many projects were funded to restore or maintain water and sediment quality to a baseline. However, very little monitoring data exists to establish this baseline in the Coastal Alabama Watershed. This project aims to survey a large area of Mobile Bay and surrounding waterways monthly to assess what the baseline of water and sediment quality is currently, allowing ongoing and future projects to compare impact results to a consistent data set. Monthly surveys include sampling surface and bottom water and sediment from Mississippi Sound, Mobile Delta, Weeks Bay, and surrounding river systems. Samples are analyzed for hydrographic data; suspended, dissolved, and sediment sequestered nutrients; and emerging pollutants such as HABs and PPCP toxins. Data collection started in September of 2025 and will continue for one year. While there is not enough data yet to establish a baseline for each of the analytes being collected, preliminary processing can reveal trends or patterns in total suspended solids (TSS). The majority of TSS introduced to the bay comes from the river systems that make up the Mobile Delta; however, when looking at river inputs excluding the Delta, Dog River stands out as having slightly higher TSS comparatively. One potential explanatory variable includes the amount of urbanization around each river system. With the continuation of this project, we expect more trends to be revealed in our data, further defining the complexities of this dynamic system, achieving a more complete data set and defining a robust baseline.
