Ruth Flynn Raftery, JD, CPA, AEP®
As President and Co-founder of Advanced Planning Educational Group (APEG), Ruth is responsible for creating and executing the design and strategic direction of APEG’s mission to support the needs of financial professionals who participate in the holistic planning process. With a unique depth of experience, and academic credentials, including Attorney and Certified Public Accountant, Ruth specializes in translating complex topics into practical, actionable, educational experiences. Her primary focus is partnering with leadership teams at financial institutions nationwide to design and deploy educational programs that drive both knowledge and professional growth among financial professionals at various career stages.
Ruth is an instructor at Oakland University in Rochester, Michigan, where she teaches Income Tax in the post-graduate certification program. Over the past 8 years she has been invited to speak at hundreds of conferences and events throughout the Financial Industry. She is well versed on all areas of advanced planning, including estate planning, income taxation, risk management, and retirement income strategies and seeks to create educational events that are entertaining and unique.
Throughout her 30-year career, Ruth has held a variety of roles that uniquely position her to understand the holistic planning process. As a CPA, she spent 12 years in the Tax Department at Deloitte, and was a Director in the Estate, Gift and Trust Services Group at Wiss & Company LLP. Her expertise in estate, gift and trust taxation allowed her to serve clients including owners of closely held businesses, high net-worth families, and individuals who serve as fiduciaries for estates and trusts. In roles outside of public accounting, Ruth led the Product Development process for Tax Products at Thomson Reuters, was the Director of Business Development at FMV Opinions, and participated in the planning process as a Wealth Advisor at Round Table Wealth Management.
Ruth is a licensed Attorney (NY, NJ, and PA (inactive)) and a Certified Public Accountant (Washington State). She is past President of the Estate Planning Council of New York City, past Chair of the Estate Planning Committee of the New York State Society of Certified Public Accountants and is an Accredited Estate Planner designee™ awarded by the National Association of Estate Planners and Councils. Ruth also serves as a Senior Advisor to AltaView Advisors, LLC a national business valuation firm.
Ruth was born and raised in Old Forge, PA. She received a Bachelor of Science degree in Accounting from the University of Scranton in Scranton, PA and her Law Degree from Temple University School of Law in Philadelphia, PA. She and her husband Brian have 3 adult daughters, Brigid, Megan & Erin and they live in Westfield, NJ.
