Name
Securing Classrooms: Door Hardware and Active Threats
Date & Time
Wednesday, November 5, 2025, 9:15 AM - 10:15 AM
Description

Research shows that when students and staff can quickly get out of sight, behind a closed, locked door, their chance of surviving an active assailant incident, without physical harm, is nearly 100%. This session explores the critical role door hardware plays in school safety while examining real-life incidents where hardware either supported or failed protection efforts.
Attendees will gain insights into how the door hardware industry has responded with research-driven design and innovation, and why aftermarket barricade devices may increase risk rather than reduce it. Learn how thoughtful, code-compliant hardware solutions can strengthen school safety without compromising life safety.

At the end of this session, attendees will:

  1. Explain the life-safety role of door hardware in active assailant scenarios, including how fast and secure lockdowns can significantly reduce harm.
  2. Analyze real-world incidents to understand how door hardware performance impacted school safety outcomes, both positively and negatively.
  3. Evaluate the risks and code implications of using aftermarket security devices such as barricade hardware in educational environments.
  4. Identify compliant, research-based door hardware solutions that enhance school security while preserving fire accessibility, and other life safety requirements.
